Writing Studio
Working together to perfect our academic writing
The Writing Studio presents an opportunity for students to enhance their academic writing style by working collaboratively with other students. The meetings are run by students on a weekly basis, with the support of the Learning Skills Centre. The meetings require a relatively high standard of English, and some knowledge of grammatical terminology is helpful. Participants usually comprise a mix of students with English as their first language and students with English as their second language, most—but not all—of whom are studying for a postgraduate degree.
Each week, two students provide a piece of their own writing (usually one to two paragraphs) that they feel could be improved; in meetings we freely discuss ways to re-phrase and re-word those paragraphs for precision, and to reflect the writer’s intentions. In this format, everyone participates and everyone benefits.
We are always seeking people who might wish to join our meetings from time to time: students do not need to make a weekly commitment.
Meetings take place on Thursdays 10:00–10:50 pm at the Learning Skills Centre seminar room.
