Learning Skills

Honours and postgraduate students

The LSC offers courses and workshops specifically targeted to honours and postgraduate students. Also, check out the services and resources on the left navigation bar, including the Workshops page, which links to learning events for all students.

For Honours Students

Your Honours Year: Making a First Class Start is a four-session course on skills such as efficient researching, time management, structuring assignments, editing, and writing a literature review. More info and enrolment »

Writing an Annotated Bibliography or Literature Review is a single lecture explaining the difference between these two tasks and suggesting ideas for researching the literature and structuring a literature review. A librarian advises on library resources and searching databases. More info and enrolment »

Lectures for Thesis Writers

We offer a series of five lectures, aimed specifically at postgraduate students completing a thesis.

  1. Writing a Thesis Proposal, outlining and explaining the different elements that may be expected in a research proposal.
  2. Writing a Literature Review, suggesting ideas for researching the literature and structuring a literature review as part of a thesis. A librarian also advises on library resources and searching databases.
  3. Making Supervision Work, offering suggestions for a smooth working relationship between student and supervisor.
  4. Time Management, explaining time management theory, and offering practical advice for postgraduates, but especially for thesis writers.
  5. Written Style for Thesis Writing and Publishing, designed to raise awareness of common errors of style and to encourage good communication in clear, concise, effective prose.

Other Resources

Our lunchtime seminar series Get Net Savvy covers IT skills of special interest to postgraduate students.

The Postgraduate Students’ Association lets students know about upcoming LSC events: they have a website, Facebook page, and Twitter stream.

Each year the LSC runs GradFest, a week of lectures and workshops of special interest to postgraduates, with guest speakers from around the university (and free food!); see the pages for GradFest ’09, GradFest ’10, and GradFest ’11. We have also hosted guest speakers on topics of interest to postgrads; here is Jennifer Clement's PowerPoint on The American Job Market from our Doctoral Seminar Series.
